We are looking for a candidate motivated by systems biology and with strong background in mathematical modelling and computer science. Previous training in biology is an advantage.

Thesis:
Studying lipid metabolism of Plasmodium is of great interest as its normal functioning is essential for the survival of the parasite. Targeting this metabolism with drugs represents a new pharmaceutical approach against malaria. Plasmodium is well suited for systems biology studies because during its life cycle this parasite activates a rare diversity of metabolic pathways. Reconstructing synthesis pathways of lipid metabolism in Plasmodium is crucial for understanding the biology of this agent of disease. The objective of this thesis is to develop a methodology for constructing dynamic mixed metabolic and genetic networks by using heterogeneous data. This methodology will be applied to transcriptomic and metabolomic data in order to build a model for lipid metabolism in Plasmodium. This model will be used for /in silico/ studies of the life cycle and of the defences against perturbations of the parasite.

Team:
The phD Student will join the new team `Biological Physics and Systems Biology` in the lab DIMNP (UMR 5235) in Montpellier. Our team develops physical, mathematical and computer science approaches for the understanding of the functioning of biological systems. At the centre of our approaches is the multi-scale modelling of the biological processes by using statistical physics, dynamical systems and stochastic processes techniques.

Applicants are invited for a full-time PhD scholarship at the Software
Engineering Group at the Department of Computing, City University
London to conduct research in the area of Software Architectures and

The studentship is available to both UK/EU and overseas fee-paying

We seek a highly motivated and creative Ph.D. student for a
multi-disciplinary project funded by NSF. Innovation and diligence combined
with the ability to assimilate cross-disciplinary literature are essential.
The primary goal is the Re-Os dating of graptolites in a detailed
biostratigraphic context. The student will be based with the AIRIE Program
at Colorado State University, with a competitive stipend for at least two
years.

The Re-Os work will dovetail with field studies, sequence stratigraphy, and
graptolite taxonomy spearheaded by S. Egenhoff and J. Maletz and a PhD
student focused on the stratigraphy.

Job description
PhD in Mathematics, applied to research in ‘Biostatistics and Bioinformatics’
Authorities and official bodies world-wide require animal experiments in order to be able to guarantee the safety of clinical tests on humans for medical products. Through implementation of what they call the “3Rs” initiative, the NIH has been striving to develop alternative product testing methods that will: Reduce the number of animals used in testing, Refine testing procedures so animals experience less pain and distress; or Replace animals with non-animal testing systems.

The goal of this project is to investigate innovative statistical approaches that offer ways to reduce the number of animals in future toxicology studies to obtain the same information as is currently the case, or obtain more information from existing data sets (better study design, dose-response models, more accurate response variables, complex hierarchical clustering models. Longitudinal models,…). In addition and also within the “3Rs” initiative, this project wants to investigate the predictive potential of particular in-vitro tests for in-vivo animal experiments. To that purpose multivariate projection methods, surrogate-marker methodologies, joint modeling of multivariate outcomes of different data types,.. will be in demand.
The main goal of this 6 months period is to prepare the candidate for a Baekeland Grant. Both in September and in January an application for such grant will be submit and an extension for the next 4 years is conditional on the success of these applications. In case of a successful application a PhD will be initiated.

Profile

* Experience with the design and analysis of statistical applications (e.g in the pharmaceutical industry);
* experience in the use of statistical software such as SAS, S-Plus, R, StatXact, etc.;
* excellent knowledge of the English language and good scientific writing skills;

Application procedure

Applicants need to hold a two-year Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or the equivalent, or expect to receive such by 31 January 2011. Applicants shall have submitted their thesis at the time of application, to the extent the thesis forms part of their Master’s programme.

Applicants with a non-Danish Master’s degree will have their degree assessed by The Danish Agency for International Education to establish, if the Master’s degree is equivalent to a Danish Master’s degree. Employment as a PhD student occurs pursuant to the applicable rules of the Faculty of Humanities, as well as between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). Under this agreement, the PhD student is obliged – without further remuneration – to carry out allotted work to an extent corresponding to a total of 840 working hours in the case of a three-year contract.

The PhD student will be working at the same department of the faculty as the supervisor. Daily presence at the department is expected.

A certified copy of the applicant’s Master’s Degree diploma needs to be submitted as one of the enclosures to the application. Certification shall be by a public authority such as the institution having issued the diploma or a public bureau specializing in diploma certification. The applicant may be asked to submit the originally certified copy of the Master’s Degree diploma after the application deadline.

If the MA diploma and/or examination records are in another language than English, Danish, Norwegian or Swedish, please include a translation into either of these languages in your application.

The translation of diplomas/certificates and transcripts must be made by or approved by either:

a Danish state-authorised translator and interpreter or

the embassy or consulate of the country where the original document was issued or where the translation was made or

a Danish consulate/embassy.

The 4-year programme will comprise a combined first year and a 3-year self directed research project. The first year will include taught modules and laboratory rotations designed to equip students with the knowledge to make an informed choice of doctoral project.

The programme is available for admission in October 2010 and is open to all Home/EU and overseas students. A starting stipend of approximately 18,685 per annum will be provided. Tuition fees will be paid at the Home/EU rate. The deadline for receipt of applications is 14th May 2010.

DIMAP Centre (Computer Science/Mathematics / Warwick Business School: Operational Research) The DIMAP aims to recruiting qualified and highly motivated students for PhD scholarships. Applicants should have a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Operational Research, with excellent grades and references. Interest in interdisciplinary research is a bonus.

Typically only UK/EU fees are covered, though this may be waived for outstanding overseas applicants. About RONPAKU Program


The aim of JSPS’s RONPAKU (Dissertation PhD) Program is to provide tutorial and financial support to promising young researchers in Asia who wish to obtain their PhD degrees from Japanese universities through the submission of a dissertation without going through a doctoral course. Grantees under the program (RONPAKU Fellows) are given the opportunity to visit their Japanese advisor once a year to receive direct supervision at the Japanese university where they will submit their PhD thesis.

* RONPAKU Fellows may visit their Japanese host university once a year for a maximum period of 90 days for the purpose of studying under the supervision of their Japanese advisor.
* JSPS provides RONPAKU Fellows with a roundtrip international air ticket (economy class), maintenance allowance and medical/accidental insurance, and covers expenses related to dissertation submission during their stays in Japan.
* The Japanese advisor may visit the RONPAKU fellow’s home university or research institution once a year for a maximum period of 30 days for the purpose of supervising RONPAKU Fellow’s study.
* JSPS provides Japanese Advisors with a roundtrip air ticket (economy class) and maintenance allowance, and covers their visa issuance fees and supervising expenses during their stays in the fellow’s country.
* During the fellow’s stay in Japan, JSPS provides the Japanese Advisor with an allowance for supervising his/her study at the host institution.

Details of the scholarship
The living allowance stipend is $20,000 per annum, tax exempt for three years. International students who are offered the scholarship will also be considered for a tuition fee waiver scholarship.

Eligibility
To be considered, candidates will require a first-class honours or second-class division A honours degree, an appropriate masters degree (research or coursework) or a professional doctorate from a recognised institution. Masters degrees by coursework and professional doctorates must contain a significant research component (no less than 33 per cent of the total degree) or significant publications records.
