We are looking for a candidate motivated by systems biology and with strong background in mathematical modelling and computer science. Previous training in biology is an advantage.

Thesis:
Studying lipid metabolism of Plasmodium is of great interest as its normal functioning is essential for the survival of the parasite. Targeting this metabolism with drugs represents a new pharmaceutical approach against malaria. Plasmodium is well suited for systems biology studies because during its life cycle this parasite activates a rare diversity of metabolic pathways. Reconstructing synthesis pathways of lipid metabolism in Plasmodium is crucial for understanding the biology of this agent of disease. The objective of this thesis is to develop a methodology for constructing dynamic mixed metabolic and genetic networks by using heterogeneous data. This methodology will be applied to transcriptomic and metabolomic data in order to build a model for lipid metabolism in Plasmodium. This model will be used for /in silico/ studies of the life cycle and of the defences against perturbations of the parasite.

Team:
The phD Student will join the new team `Biological Physics and Systems Biology` in the lab DIMNP (UMR 5235) in Montpellier. Our team develops physical, mathematical and computer science approaches for the understanding of the functioning of biological systems. At the centre of our approaches is the multi-scale modelling of the biological processes by using statistical physics, dynamical systems and stochastic processes techniques.

Quota Scheme Schlarship 2011 For Developing Countries, Norway

The goal of the Quota Scheme is to give students from developing countries in the South, Central- and East-Europe and Central-Asia, relevant education that would also benefit their home countries when they return after graduation.The programme also contributes to strengthen Norwegian institutions of higher education's participation in global knowledge cooperation.The Norwegian government provides scholarships for students from developing countries in the South and countries of Central- and East-Europe and Central-Asia under the Quota Scheme. The overall objective of the Quota Scheme is to promote the internationalisation of higher education.Today, the scheme provides funding for a total of 1100 students, 800 of them from developing countries in the South and 300 from Central- and East-Europe and Central-Asia.Each year universities and university colleges in Norway are allocated a certain number of quota students. Most of the universities and university colleges in Norway offer courses and educational programmes in English. The scheme normally includes courses at the Master and Ph.D. level, in addition to certain professional degrees. In order to locate a programme eligible under the scheme, please contact the Norwegian institutions directly.

Scholarships
The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund ( Statens Lånekasse) is responsible for managing the financial support provided for the Quota students. Each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an equivalent educational programme. About 30 per cent of the amount is given as a grant and 70 per cent as a loan. However, the loan portion is waived when the student returns to his/her home country after completing the course of study. Normally, the financial support will not not exceed a time span of four years for one definite study plan, or a combination of two programmes.

Additional financing
Travelling expenses for entry into Norway can be reimbursed (fixed price). Students can apply for one annual home visit if the educational programme lasts more than one year, as well as financial support for travelling expenses for field work during the course of study. When the student returns home within 3 months after finishing the course, the cost of travelling home is covered by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund.

Eligible countries in the Quota Scheme

The Quota Scheme is for certain developing countries that are on the DAC-list issued by OECD, and is eligible for students from the category of “ lower middle-income countries” and under. Also, the scheme accepts students from Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and Palestinian students from the Palestinian Authorities.

The process of allocating quota places focuses on a purposeful distribution according to country, area of study and institution of higher education.

Students from the following countries qualify under the Quota Scheme for the school years 2008-2009, 2009-2010 and 2010-2011:

Admission requirements

The Norwegian universities and university colleges participating in the Quota Scheme have an English version of their website, where applicants can find more detailed information about the admission requirements for each course offered. Below are some general requirements.

Students usually apply for a degree course which is based on continuation of their studies in their home country, or a course which can be a joint part of a degree course in their home country ( joint degree or sandwich programmes). Most of the programmes are at the Master or Ph.D. level, but the Quota Scheme also offers certain professional studies.

Students must apply directly from their home country and must have stayed at least one year in their home country directly prior to the planned course of study at the Norwegian university/university college.

Basic general requirements
All candidates should typically have the following basic qualifications:

* Secondary school certificates
* Minimum two years of higher education from your home country

Some exceptions apply for certain professional educational courses.

A list (GSU-list) has been compiled by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT) with the general entrance requirements for applicants with higher education qualifications from abroad. NOKUT is the Norwegian governmental organisation for recognition of foreign higher education. If you cannot find your academic papers on the list you may contact NOKUT to get an evaluation of your certificates.

Basic English language requirements
English is the main teaching language of instruction in most of the educational programmes and degrees in the Quota Scheme. Applicants who are not native English speakers therefore must document their proficiency in English by passing one of the following tests:

* TOEFL ( Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 500/ 550 (170 if computer-based)
* IELTS ( International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 5.0 (6.0 if computer-based)

Please note that the requirements may differ, and in some cases be higher than described above.

Basic Norwegian language requirements
A few courses in the Quota Scheme are offered in Norwegian and require good Norwegian language skills. Applicants who are not native Norwegian speakers therefore must document their proficiency in Norwegian by passing one of the following tests:

* Bergenstest (Norwegian language test) with a minimum score of 450
* Norwegian language course Level 3 with E as a minimum
* Norwegian in the secondary school (The Teaching Plan for Norwegian as a second Language) written and oral, with a minimum score of 2

Admission to the Quota Scheme is highly competitive and meeting the minimum requirements is no guarantee for enrolment. Please refer to the International Office at each university/university college for more detailed information about admission requirements.


Application procedures

If you are interested in applying for a course/programme under the Quota Scheme, please read carefully the information on this page.

The Quota Scheme as a rule only enrols students from institutions which have collaboration agreements with Norwegian universities or university colleges. Norwegian institutions usually do not admit free movers (individual applicants) to this scheme. Only in very special cases can free movers be considered. Please contact the Norwegian institutions for individual information.

To find out which institutions collaborate with Norwegian institutions, please refer to the websites of the Norwegian institutions.

Students who come to Norway as self-financed students will, as a rule, not be considered as being qualified for the Quota Scheme.

Who handle the applications?
The Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education (SIU) is not the admission office for prospective quota students. The institutions of higher education that are part of the Quota Scheme are handling all applications from prospective students, and at no time is SIU involved in the admission process. Thus, SIU cannot answer questions from individual students regarding applications, courses, recognition of papers, etc.

Where do I find the application form?
Applications forms are available from the websites of the universities and university colleges. All applications should be sent directly to the International Office at the university/college to which the student applies.

Application deadline

The deadline for applying for the Quota scheme is usually December 1 every year. Some courses and educational programmes may have other deadlines than the this. Please contact the International Office at the university/college to which you want to apply for detailed information.

The Letter of Admission is normally sent to the successfull candidate by April 15 every year. Accepted students will also receive relevant practical information about studying in Norway.

The ASEAN Scholarships for Indonesia is tenable for 4 years leading to the award of the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced (GCE A) Level (or equivalent) certificate. Introduction

The University of Sydney World Scholars awards provide opportunities for academically gifted PhD candidates who have developed innovative research projects to undertake a PhD degree at the University of Sydney with financial support. This prestigious award will attract high-quality research candidates from a broad range of countries and disciplines. Candidates will engage in progressive research whilst facilitating the development of strong bilateral research linkages between Australia and the rest of the world.

General Guidelines

World Scholars awards support the full cost of academic tuition fees for up to three (3) years on the terms set out in these Guidelines. The scholarship will also fund a travel contribution towards the cost of a return international airfare (as set out in the „Air Travel‟ section of the Scholarship Conditions, below).
Applications are invited from international students who are citizens of the following countries (“Participating Countries”):

PhD position: optoelectronics_ photovoltaic applications

Research activity
The successful candidate will explore energy and charge transfer processes in organic/inorganic and fully organic nanostructures for photovoltaic applications based on colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, conjugated polymers and metal oxides of different nature. Combining the use of both advanced spectroscopic techniques such as time-resolved Photoluminescence and Photo-induced Absorption spectroscopy and electrical characterizations, light has to be shed on the fundamental working mechanisms of light harvesting and charge generation and devices structures will be designed, fabricated and optimized consequentially.

Required experience
The successful candidate will have a Master Degree in Physics, Physical-Chemistry, Engineering or related disciplines. Experience in experimental research performed at undergraduate level will be beneficial. In addition, the candidate should be strongly motivated and possess good communication skills and be able to work as part of a team.

PhD course title: Materials Engineering

Research activity
Research is focused on the synthesis of conjugated polymers to be combined with nanostructured metal oxides for the development of hybrid photovoltaic cells. The optimization of both the processes of absorption of the solar light and interaction among the several device constituents will be taken into account for the design of new molecules. Attention will be paid also to the material processing, in particular to the infiltration of the organic moiety into the mesoporous structure of the inorganic counterpart. Thanks to the facilities and expertises available in CNST IIT@PoliMI, the test of the developed materials into device prototypes will be carried out, giving further support to the evaluation of the relationships between the molecular structure and the obtained properties.

Required experience
Master Degree in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Material Science, Engineering or related disciplines (to be obtained before December 31st, 2010). Minimum knowledge of the English language: B2 level or equivalent (to be certified before September 30th, 2010).

PhD position: synthesis_organic photovoltaics

PhD course title: Materials Engineering

Research activity
Research is focused on the synthesis of conjugated oligomers to be included in bulk heterojunction solar cells to yield multicomponent blends. The design of such species will be driven by the optimization of the photoinduced charge and energy transfer processes required for the solar harvesting. Suitable strategies to control the morphology of the active layer will be evaluated, considering both physical (annealing treatments) and chemical methods. Among the latter, the synthesis of covalently linked moieties in double cable structures, and/or the development of molecules to be used into interfacial layers will be taken into account.

Required experience
Master Degree in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Material Science, Engineering or related disciplines (to be obtained before December 31st, 2010). Minimum knowledge of the English language: B2 level or equivalent (to be certified before September 30th, 2010).

PhD position: optoelectronics_ inkjet printed optoelectronic devices

Research activity
The successful candidate will be involved in the development of printed electronic devices in the multidisciplinary and stimulating environment of the Center for Nano Science and Technology of the Italian Institute of Technology (CNST-IIT@Polimi) in Milan. Direct-write, additive and digital printing of solution based functional materials are attracting a lot of interest in many fields and especially for the fabrication of opto-electronic devices because they offer advantages in terms of process simplification, compatibility with large-area and flexible substrates, and potential cost reduction compared to subtractive lithographic patterning, while being a more environmental friendly approach. In this framework CNST is active on both the development of printed organic detectors, and of the corresponding addressing electronics, for imaging applications. The technique of choice is inkjet printing, where CNST has a strong expertise, although other depositions technique, needed as an intermediate step or to be integrated in the overall process, will have to be investigated within this research (e.g. spin-coating, spraying, lithography…). Soluble organic and inorganic semiconductors and highly conducting metal inks will be adopted to fabricate suitable devices and arrays. Current limitations to the development of high performance devices are represented by the resolution achievable with standard tools, the uniformity of the processes and their reliability. To this extent a precise control over printing parameters have to be gained. A specific design of the device architecture, compatible with a low temperature, multilayer printing process on transparent and/or flexible substrates needs to be developed to optimize the device performances. Where needed, high-resolution techniques, beyond what achievable with standard processes, will have to be investigated. An understating of the fundamental mechanism governing the device operation will have to be developed to provide the necessary feedback for the design and process evaluation. The main characterization tools that the successful candidate will adopt will be microscopy techniques (optical, profilometry, AFM, SEM) and electrical measurements (I-V, EQE…). Thanks to the facilities and expertises available in CNST IIT@PoliMI, the student will be provided with all the needed instruments for a successful project and a gratifying Ph.D.

Required experience
The successful candidate will have a Master Degree in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Engineering or related disciplines. A strong motivation, with an interest for “hands-on” experimental activities, is a necessary prerequisite, together with good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team. A proven knowledge of the English language is needed. Experience in experimental research performed at undergraduate level and a basic knowledge of electrical characterization techniques will be beneficial.

They are intended for those who are already leaders or have the potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region. The ALA program comprises of Scholarships and Fellowships.

ALA Scholarships are academically elite awards offered to high achievers from the Asia-Pacific region each year to undertake postgraduate study (Masters or Doctorate) and a Leadership Development Program in Australia.

REGULATION OF ION CHANNELS IN CARCINOGENESIS

Developmental Biology and Cancer (UNSA CNRS UMR 6543), in the group of Dr Franck

Borgese at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis / CNRS, Nice, France.

Our project will focus on the regulation of ion channels involved in cancer cell behaviour

(apoptosis resistance, extra cellular matrix adhesion and degradation, motility, proliferation) .

Recently, we have demonstrated that a unique tumour biomarker, the sigma-1 receptor

(Sig1R), was functionally associated to Cl- and K+ channels in lung cancer and leukaemia

cells. We have shown that the over-expression of Sig1R in cancer cells enhances cell

apoptotic resistance through a decrease of volume-regulated Cl- channels activation kinetics

(Renaudo et al., 2007; Le Guennec et al., 2008). Moreover, exogenous sigma ligands inhibit

cell cycle through a K+ channel / p27kip1-dependent pathway (Renaudo et al. 2004).

The project will deal on the molecular mechanisms associating the Sig1R to ion channels

aberrantly expressed in leukaemia and breast cancer cells, in relation to their

aggressiveness state. Finally, in vivo significance of the described mechanisms will be

explored in a mouse metastatic model.

Main technical approaches: Molecular cell biology, genetics, microscopy imagery and

electrophysiology (patch-clamp) .

We are seeking highly talented and self-motivated candidates. A background in the field of

electrophysiology and cell physiology will be appreciated. The position will be available on

Ph.D. Position in a BILAT project between Norway and Japan at NTNU `Vacancies in aluminum alloys in a context of trace elements and recycling`

We primary seek candidates with a Master in Materials Science or Solid State Physics, motivated for experimental activities in the fields of aluminum alloys according to a BILAT project between Norway and Japan. The purpose of the bilateral project, called `Norwegian-Japanese Al-Mg-Si Alloy Precipitation Project`, is as follows: `The primary objective is to identify impact of selected trace elements on precipitation and study vacancies in relation to trace elements in Al-Mg-Si alloys. This will be done in a bilateral Norwegian/Japanese research collaboration between Norway (Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) / SINTEF / Hydro Aluminum) and Japan (University of Toyama /Tokyo institute of Technology). Building up competence to understand these fundamental issues will be of general importance for the light metals community and can assist Hydro in increasing the quality and reduce the energy consumption in their future Aluminum products`.


The PhD project is called `Vacancies in aluminum alloys in a context of trace elements and recycling`. Here experiments and calculations will be used to focus on vacancies, how they bind with solute, their effects on diffusion, nucleation of precipitates, in special relation to the trace elements in 6xxx alloys. In this study we aim at detecting vacancies (indirectly or directly) preferably via solute-vacancy pairs. To study some features of the vacancies various advanced microscopy analytical techniques like scanning TEM (STEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) may be used. The more recent techniques Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (PAS) / Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) are probably most significant, because they are specially suited for the study of vacancies or pores in materials. Here one aim is to find the factors that make it possible to control the strength increase taking place at room temperature just after cooling from extrusion (prior to final ageing). This is believed to be driven solely by vacancies. Studying vacancies is a challenging task. However, with the use of several independent methods, the combination of the two projects, the previous experience in precipitation and precipitate structure for these alloys, and at last, the long industrial research with these materials, it is expected that new insights will be achieved.

Experience in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and other advanced characterization methods is useful. Depending on chosen topics and project needs, and the candidates` background and qualifications, the position will be allocated either to the Materials Science or the Physics department in NTNU.

Postgraduate Research in Environmental – Chemical Analysis, Dublin City University, Ireland
Chemical analysis of novel contaminants in the Irish aquatic environment and their potential to bioconcentrate and bioaccumulate up the food chain.

Funding Agency: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government.

Description: The project shall concentrate on using established techniques to measure novel environmental contaminants, particularly pharmaceuticals in the Irish aquatic environment and their bioconcentration ability.
The various pharmaceuticals under investigation (including antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, lipid regulators, anti-convulsants and beta-blockers), are known to be present in Irish municipal effluents. Chemical analysis of pharmaceuticals in treated municipal effluent and receiving waters (freshwater and marine) shall be undertaken using solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by analysis by LC/MS/MS to identify and quantify these compounds.

The ability of these compounds to bioconcentrate shall be investigated by chemical analysis on various tissues from bioindicator species, marine and freshwater bivalve mussels (Mytilus edulis and the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha respectively) exposed in vivo and in situ to individual compounds, mixtures and complex effluents. Bioaccumulation through the food chain with the potential for human exposure shall also be investigated using multi-tropic level studies.

The student shall be primarily based in the Irish Separation Science Cluster (ISSC) lab in DCU where the chemical analysis shall be undertaken, but shall be working as part of a team on an EPA funded environmental toxicology project located in the Irish Centre for Environmental Toxicology (ICET) in GMIT, where all in vivo and exposure aspects of the project shall be undertaken. Project supervision shall be from both DCU (Prof Brett Paull) and GMIT (Dr Brian Quinn), with the degree awarded from DCU.

Requirements / Background: Candidates should posses a primary degree (minimum II:I) in a relevant discipline (Chemistry). A good understanding and experience of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry is an advantage. Computer literacy is essential. Candidates must have European driving licence, be willing to travel to various test sites around the country and to visit/work in GMIT on occasion. Studentship is subject to performance that is satisfactory to both DCU/GMIT and the EPA.

Conditions: €1,333.33 per month plus fees and travel budget.

Postdoctoral position in Epidemiology
Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is a leading academic affiliate of Harvard Medical School and has been consistently recognized as one of America’s best hospitals by US News and World Report.

A Post Doctoral position is available to work with Dr. Alexander Turchin in the Division of Endocrinology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. The focus of the group is on using cutting edge information technology tools to study quality of care of chronic endocrine conditions (diabetes, hypertension). We leverage the resources of multi-million patient database at Partners HealthCare (an integrated healthcare delivery system founded by the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital) to combine traditional administrative and clinical data from electronic medical records with novel data elements computationally extracted from narrative electronic documents.

Principal duties and essential functions:

The position will involve epidemiologic analysis of large datasets, writing up of manuscripts for publication and preparation of grant proposals. First authorship on manuscripts is encouraged.

Job Requirements:

The successful candidate will have recently completed graduate studies in a Ph.D. program with a strong research record in health services research, health policy, health economics and / or related field. Experience in statistical programming and data management is highly desirable. Excellent technical, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills and an ability to work independently are necessary.

Salary: The position is compensated according to the NIH post-doctoral stipend scale. This position is until October 2011.
